#CRASHLETE of the Month

Mike Green

Mike Green was drafted in the first round to the Washington Capitals in the 2004 NHL draft. He is known for his hard slapshot and impressive offensive stats. He has been known as “Game Over Green” for his knack at scoring game-winning goals and has been nominated twice for the NHL humanitarian of the year. He is an original Crashlete and is the June Crashlete of the month!

Mike Green played minor hockey in Calgary with the NASA Hockey Association. His Major Junior years were spent in the WHL with the Saskatoon Blades for 5 seasons. The 03/04 season was good for him with a 14 goal, 39 point season.

Mike Green has played 880 regular season and 76 playoff games in the NHL combined with the Washington Capitals, Detroit Red Wings, and the Edmonton Oilers. He has accumulated 150 goals, 351 assists, and 501 points total in his NHL career. He was an NHL First All-Star twice in 2009 & 2010 and played in two NHL All-Star Games in 2011 & 2018. He owns 2 franchise records for the Washington Capitals, Most consecutive games by a defenseman with a goal (8 Games in 2008/09) and Most powerplay goals in a season (18 goals in 2008/09).

Last August, Green confirmed his retirement from the NHL. He wraps up an impressive NHL career as a two-time Norris Trophy finalist and one of the best defensemen in Capitals history. His best NHL season was 2008-09 when he racked up 31 goals and 73 points in 68 games. He wants to spend more time with his family, help others in the community, and focus more on evolving passions. “Being an athlete isn’t the only part of who I am,” Green said. “I am a husband, father, son, brother, uncle. I’ve been very fortunate to turn my passion into my profession, but at this point in my life, I’m considering other things that I feel called to do.”

Mike Green is involved in numerous community events and organizations. He raises money for Children’s National Medical Center, participates in speaking at local middle schools with Alexander Ovechkin, and even plays a game or two of floor hockey. He has a program called “Green’s Gang” that purchases season tickets every year and donates them to an organization called Most Valuable Kids. The organization works with underprivileged kids and active military. In 2008 he founded a charity called “So Kids Can” with Elliot Segal. During the 11/12 season, they raised money to build a playground. Over 200 community volunteers and Caps fans along with Green and Segal oversaw the construction of The S.T.A.R.S playground and was officially opened on Sept.19, 2012. So Kids Can have raised over $200 000 since it was founded.

Mike Green works hard on and off the ice, in the gym, the rink, and in the community. We are proud to call him one of ours. Congrats to our June 2021 Crashlete of the month, Mike Green.
